Back in 2019, Amy came to me about building her a home. She is pretty much family. Her dad is my husband’s second cousin on his mom’s side of the family — you get the point. But more than that, her dad has always been such a great person. The kind of person who shows up for everyone.

So when Amy came to me about building her home, I was tickled.

At the time, Amy was single and excited to build her very first home. She already had a lot picked out, had started the design process, and was ready to make it happen. But for this reason and that reason, it just never came together, and eventually she put it on pause.

But looking back now, I truly believe this is where God had a different plan.

What felt like a setback at the time was really God preparing something even bigger for her life.

Because during that time, Amy met Brandt.

And not only did she meet the person she was meant to build a life with, but her dad also found a beautiful piece of property and gifted it to her — land where she would get to build a home beside family and create a future there together.

Fast-forward to December 2021, Amy reached back out and was so excited to tell me the news. This time around, she wasn’t building alone anymore. She and Brandt were ready to build their home together.

In 2022, we broke ground on their home.

Not only did we get to build Amy and Brandt’s house, but we also got to build a pole barn on the property for her dad. It was such a fun project from the very beginning.

And then, somehow, it got even better.

Halfway through the build, Amy and Brandt met me at the house for a walk-through. They told me they had something they needed to ask me. I immediately thought it was going to be something about the framing, the layout, or another detail in the house.

But it wasn’t.

They looked at me and said, “Nikki, remember when you told us the most important part of the house is the foundation? That the foundation holds everything together? Well, as you know, we’re getting married, and we would love it if you would marry us so that our foundation starts off strong as well.”

Are you freaking kidding me?

That truly was one of the most amazing things anyone has ever asked me to do.

Now, I am not one who loves standing up in front of a big crowd and talking. But there was absolutely no way I could say no.

So after the house was finished and they moved in, I got to marry them.

It was such an honor. Something I will never forget.

And now I always joke that part of my résumé is this: I can build you a house, marry you, and offer occasional marriage advice along the way.

But in all seriousness, this is exactly why building a house means so much more to me than just building a house.

It is building memories.  

It is building a future.  

It is creating the foundation for everything that comes next.

And I get the gift of watching all of that happen.

Now, I get to go to Amy and Brandt’s house not just as their builder, but as someone who has been part of their story. Even better, I now get to hang out with their sweet little daughter and watch her grow up in the home we built together.

Life is good.
